Origin And Source

Interestingly, it is owned by followers of Islam now a day, but it is not introduced to the world by Muslims. The history of miswak dates back to the ancient times of Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Primarily, miswak is a piece of wood from a Salvadora persica tree.

The tree is commonly known as Al Arak in the Arab world, and as Peelu in South Asia. But miswak is not necessarily derived from this type of tree only. Other commonly used miswaks are made from an Olive plant (Zaitoon), Walnut Tree, and Azadirachta indica tree (neem), having their specific health benefits.

Islamic Perspective

The usage of miswak is not only a way to complete oral hygiene, but it is also an activity to please Allah (s.w.t). It is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, and according to many Sahabah, he (s.a.w) was very regular in the use of miswak, especially before ablution.
